Writ Petitions and Public Interest Law 

Writ petitions are formal written requests submitted to constitutional courts (High Courts or the Supreme Court) to enforce the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India. These petitions invoke the court’s extraordinary jurisdiction under Articles 32 and 226.

Types of Writs in India

• Habeas Corpus – To produce a person unlawfully detained before the court.
• Mandamus – To direct a public official or authority to perform a duty.
• Certiorari – To quash the order of a lower court or tribunal.
• Prohibition – To prohibit a lower court from exceeding its jurisdiction.

Public Interest Litigation (PIL)

Public interest law allows any public-spirited citizen or organization to file a petition on behalf of those who are unable to approach the court due to poverty, illiteracy, or other disadvantages. This concept, widely known as Public Interest Litigation (PIL), empowers the judiciary to address broader issues of public concern.

Who Can File
